just a hair under the top of the line new Mac Pro It was in 2009 that I was looking into this, the fastest processors at the time where well over a grand, possibly even each.though I am in Europe, so shipping/inflated prices on this stuff probably compounded things.yeah I have changed processors before on various computers, though not much with Apples I just remember there being some potential issue with removing/reseating the new processor though.though as you mentioned it was the 2009.at $370 for a matched pair, if I still had the Mac Pro now, I would definitely go for it though.

Thats my Geekbench score after the upgrade posted below. then its not for you but there are also places that do a "tray swap" and the work is done for you Swapping a processor is not rocket science but if you can not turn 8 screws and apply thermal paste. Cost was $400 for two 6 core Xeons 3.33Ghz. I swapped both of mine in my 2010 and it was SUPER easy. just a hair under the top of the line new Mac Pro but you are wanting to compare to 12 core machines like the upgrade you are wanting to do. Logic TOTALLY utilizes extra coresĪs far as ANY quad core iMac having more processing power than 8 core Xeons. Head over to the Logic thread here on GS and read the benchmarks on multicore.

I remember looking into this years ago, it was a 2009 Mac Pro.besides the difficulty/expense involved in getting the right processors, it's a tricky enough install, some people mentioned damaging their new processors in attempting to fit them.I did a fair bit of research at the time and the cost of getting the faster CPUs plus the risk of damaging said CPUs just didn't weigh up for me.I sold it and bought an iMac and took it apart and put in better HDs, extra RAM etc.also Logic wasn't utilizing the extra cores for the most part anyway, so the faster quad had way more processing than the stock Mac Pro 8-core and looked like it wasn't going to be far behind the CPUs I had in mind either, managed to get a refurb for way under the mark as it had a big dent on the back, win win.yeah those new Mac Pros are way too expensive, and they screw you on the internal drive upgrade 256GBs stock, I mean WTF.Īnyway, there were some great threads about this around at the time, might be still on the net, I'd recommend you do a good trawl for them.Īnyway, there were some great threads about this around at the time, might be still on the net, I'd recommend you do a good trawl for them.I swapped both of mine in my 2010 and it was SUPER easy.
